Survey of Jack Island

For Father’s Day this year, the guys tried for a kayaking expedition to the other side of Jack Island.

The herons were unimpressed by this endeavor.

The guys were just happy that it wasn’t pouring as much as the day before. The fact that the tide was going out was a minor issue, to be dealt with on return.

The paddle out to Jack Island and around it is easy, but not too easy. It’s long enough to make a worthwhile trip, but because it’s over tidal flats for the most part, it reduces the worry of boat traffic, and the current is relatively light.

The other side of the island, though, is a different story! A deeper channel and a stronger current meant more work, and a boat lookout. In fact, the varying current meant a lot of veering from course!

The bonus for going around is the wildlife. A sea lion on the back side of Jack gave them the stink eye. Its intelligent gaze made it seem more like a sea dog, but it wasn’t willing to get close.

Based on my imprecise guesstimates, it’s about a mile round-trip. When the day lightened up enough, our guest went out for another run at it, taking his daughter this time. This time the tide was starting to come in, so the long slog out in the muck will be nicely offset by an easier return.

Thanks to Laurie & Bernie, Kaley & Connor for their great company on a relaxing Father’s Day weekend!
