For a change of pace & scenery, we headed down to the Oregon Coast. Sandy beaches, twisty trees, and amazing rock formations were new; rain, drizzle, and mist were familiar.
Here’s our view as we crossed into Astoria, Oregon, on a very long bridge across the mouth of the Columbia River. Yep, lots of rain! We were hoping to catch the last gasps of summer weather, but instead we were just in time for the first few pulses of winter drizzle.
Our destination was Cannon Beach, home to the amazing Haystack Rock, sitting RIGHT there on the beach. We made sure to visit it often: sunset, early morning, any time we felt like walking just a block west.
Once we got the hang of off-season hours, we loved being able to pop over for coffee at the Sleepy Monk, dinner at the Irish Table, or breakfast up the street at the Lazy Susan.
We ventured a bit further south, looking for blue sky, a precursor to a future Highway 101 trip in its entirety. Here’s how far we got on our first try: Twin Rocks at Rockaway Beach. Our second round brought us as far south as Tillamook, where we joined the hordes touring the cheese factory. Mmmm, cheese!
Despite the weather, we loved having a new place to explore. All the sandy beaches were a real treat for both of us, with fond memories of our childhood visits to play in the sand and waves. I think we’ll be back!
