So I finished up an extra quarter of studies at UCLA over the summer, which gave me a brand-new minor in Linguistics to add to my Cognitive Science degree. Then, I came home to start looking for graduate schools. Again.
Last year, 4 schools caught my eye, but none of them reached out. This year, with a longer list, and a stronger application, thanks to a reworked writing sample, I applied to 9 schools and heard back from 5 with some degree of interest. It’s now down to a short list of 3 schools who would offer me a position:
- UC Santa Cruz
- McGill in Montreal
- UBC in Vancouver

McGill and UBC turned me down last year, a clear indication that it pays to develop a strong writing sample! I have until March 31st to decide, and it’s not an easy choice. All three of these departments are very good for linguistics — even Santa Cruz, which doesn’t have a very good overall reputation, is considered to have one of the best linguistics departments in the world. Then again, it’s back in California, when an opportunity to move to Canada is right there… Stay tuned!
