Our first view of the canyon, showing Bright Angel Canyon across the lookout. It’s impossible to get the scope of the scenery here, or the intensity of the color. We were shooting in midday sun on a gorgeous day, and everything looked washed out. So I’ve retouched this shot to show you what we think we saw. My own version of high dynamic range editing!
Friends suggested that we hike below the rim, even for a bit, and we were game. Until we saw this trail! As we took baby steps along the snow and thick ice, we waved on a guy with two hiking poles, only to see him coming back up shortly. He had slipped and broken both poles! Still, it was magical to get below the edge of the canyon, if only for a few minutes.
