I have been adamant about never, NEVER wanting to go to Vegas, but when a girlfriend wants to celebrate her 40th there, what are ya gonna do? Make the best of it, and find out if I was wrong, like I was about many other adamant issues. :)
First step: find a great hotel! I did not want to be on the strip, so the adventure activities at the Red Rock Spa sounded great. We had a view out to the namesake Red Rock canyon, and a short trip and walk there verified that it is gorgeous. Forgetting a camera really hurt me here!
Next step: find some great food. Getting very easy to do in Vegas. We sampled Thomas Keller’s Bouchon at the Venetian, Nobu at the Hard Rock, and finally, a dream dinner for 2 at Alex in the Wynn. Check out the online menus — yum!
What else, if not gambling? Shows! We saw Louie Anderson at the Excalibur, and laughed for over an hour solid. Then Penn & Teller put on their fabulous act at the Rio. Those guys are doing a great job promoting truth over fiction!
Finally — go with some great friends! The city can be a little scary, with all the crowds of people dressed up for a big party, if you don’t bring the party with you. Thankfully that was the easiest part of all.
Would I go again? Aha, that is the question, and a question anywhere when traveling. Given how close we are, and how many great shows end up there, I’d say yes: a quick trip with a great meal and a show I don’t want to miss is a definite possibility.
