When we heard friends were thinking of visiting Scotland in June, our ears perked up! Liz hadn’t gotten enough of the country on her first quick trip, and Dave definitely needed to go. But could it really work?
Step 1: getting there. We tried a new hub, Reykjavik, and it worked wonderfully. A red-eye trip to Iceland, followed by a quick plane change to Glasgow, and we were there. The landscape as viewed from the plane made me want to return just to Iceland, and they certainly encourage stopovers. Between the volcanoes and the shoreline, both of us would be well entertained.
Step 2: staying there. Should we be in the country? A city? Which one? As I searched for a place convenient to both Edinburgh and Glasgow, hotels were in short supply. I made the case for a self-catering apartment, and we found a lovely spot in Stirling. This trip was starting to come together!
Step 3: all the other details. We sorted out a place for Bruce to stay, boarding for the dog, a car, some hiking options, and some places we might want to visit. We packed for rainy, cloudy weather (just like home), left some room for bringing back goodies, and we were off!
