Every year early in the summer the shad flies emerge from Lake Huron. They are a strange creature leaving behind multiple “old skins” in their journey through life. The lake shore is awash with the remains of their aquatic larval bodies (happy seagulls!!) and cars, houses, etc… are covered with their shed skins as they grow to maturity in their flying form. We caught this fly emerging from his old skin on the hood of the RV. Dave’s childhood cat Tiger loved to eat these things (he lived feral on the island for a while) and the kids had no end of fun bringing him countless shad flies to eat!
