Edinburgh sits on an extinct volcano, lucky city that it is! Here’s the tip of one part of that volcano: Arthur’s Seat to the east, a 850′ climb from Holyrood Park at the bottom of the Royal Mile.
After heading back down, with a requisite stop for British ice cream treats at the bottom, we started back up the Royal Mile.
At the end of the mile, atop another bit of that extinct volcano, here’s the view back toward Arthur’s Seat from Edinburgh Castle. Very touristy, but some nice stops for lunch (Cannonsgait Pub), a tour of a 17th c. rowhouse, and some refreshment (Deacon Brodie’s tavern).
As it was Edinburgh in full tourist season, the walk was full of people, artists and street performers, and a full-blown William Wallace in character, complete with blue face paint, having a pint at the pub on his way home!
