Feeding the Birds

In the guise of checking on our place, we’ve been heading up to Guemes under strict pandemic conditions. Here’s why!

The hoggy little birds go through half this feeder in a day! Despite warnings of essential travel only, and bad numbers in the area, we thought it best to make sure our place was in one piece. It’s been known to flood on a bad high tide, have wind damage — there’s always a surprise waiting for us. We took care not to stop along the way for supplies, and even bought punch cards for the transit fare, that we could X off from behind our rolled-up windows. While we were in Whistler, friends were able to fill the gap of bird-feeding, with bonus relaxation time. But the place is showing lots of wear & tear, and a plan to update and modernize is afoot — stay tuned.

As vaccines became more available, we were even able to book our shots in nearby Anacortes, then use this view to recover. Now that we’re fully vaccinated, it’s time for the annual ferry haul-out, and we’ll be missing this place for several weeks. And the birds will be really hungry when we finally get back up there!
