Bruce entered his first fencing tournament this weekend, a youth event hosted by his club, Rain City Fencing Center.
Since he’s 14 at the start of the school year, he’s eligible to compete in the youth 14 & under (Y14) group for the season.
Eighteen kids showed up for the morning event, fencing with foils. They were grouped into 3 pools, each pool was given a lane, and everyone in each pool played a 3-minute/5-point match against each of the others.
Here, Bruce is taking on the highest-ranked member of his pool for his last match.
After a short break, the pool results produced a direct elimination chart. Bruce was paired with another member of his club, who’s been competing for a while.
These rounds were to 15 points, in 3 3-minute rounds. We quickly learned that our role was to provide hydration in between the rounds!
Bruce held his own but his opponent prevailed. In the final results, she finished just ahead of him, so it was a good fit, and a great showing for his first tournament.
