After flying all night, we found ourselves with most of a day on hand before we could check in to our apartment in Stirling. How do you occupy yourself on a 45 minute drive from Glasgow that must now take 4 hours?
It turns out, you go off to find the Falkirk Wheel! From our guide book preparation, we vaguely remembered it was on the way. Vague turned out to be appropriate, as there was roadwork and endless detours, or diversions as they’re known here. We grew to hate that word but find it, we finally did.
It’s a circular mechanism that links a higher canal with a lower one, part of the extensive renovations to the inland waterways of Scotland. Impressive, and a fine introduction to Scottish ingenuity.
