We took yet another circuitous route to get from York to Chester, an easy 2-hour drive by motorways. My way took us through Liverpool (because we were right there — I had to!) and up the coast, touching on the Yorkshire Dales. We found a castle on the way, in Ripley, where a sign for ice cream got our attention, and then agreed we really should find our hotel for the final leg.
