Season’s Greetings

Okay, 2024, what just happened? Well, Liz is feeling more at home in Vancouver, Dave is shepherding our Guemes rebuild to an almost-conclusion, and Bruce & Ella are creating structure for their finish-a-PhD marathon.

  • The new place in Vancouver is all set up! We got plants out on the deck, a sliding door to close off the loft bedroom, new lights in the dining area, and hopefully, a fridge that doesn’t need defrosting every 2 months. We’ve met several of the neighbours, including exchanging coffee dates and exploring Gastown. The finished loft bedroom means we now have a spare room for overflow, but most importantly, two office spaces for calls.
The view from Guemes — we have missed it!
  • Dave launched the big feature he’s been working on for several years. In between all that, he had some stem cell injections for his hips, knee, and toe, plus a followup. He’s looking forward to testing the results on the slopes shortly.
  • We’re at the end of a multi-year project to rebuild Guemes, which Dave’s been checking more frequently. We now have a completely new, modular 2 bedroom cabin, with solar panels on the garage; final details are getting ironed out. More here, as we said goodbye to the old version, saw the new parts come in, and captured them being put together in one day.

What with all that scooting between Vancouver, Guemes, and Seattle, we didn’t travel, other than to see family. But in a desire to change things up, we did grab a weekend break on Vancouver Island, in Parksville.

As we navigated life between two cities, Liz & Dave coordinated shows & movies to watch, often together, but sometimes separately. Here are some of our highlights:

  • Slow Horses, Bad Sisters, and Shrinking, during a short binge on Apple TV
  • Dark Winds, Bodies, Scavengers Reign, 3 Body Problem, Monsieur Spade on Netflix, where we still find plenty to turn to
  • Mrs Davis on Peacock — a worthwhile ride!
  • True Detective: Night Country and Somebody, Somewhere on Max
  • Deadloch on Prime
  • From YouTube, if we’re not up for something intense, we work through multiple seasons of Eight out of Ten Cats Does Countdown & Task Master for fun

Because we are that kind of geeky family, we track the media we loved on several databases, if you’d care to browse, or join us:

To finish out the year, we’re hosting Bruce & Ella for a solstice family gathering, our version of a trimmed-down holiday season. There will be candles, snacks, stuffed stockings, movies, and outings for shopping, as needed. And hopefully lots of time to just rest. We hope you have the version of the holidays that works best for you, and we’d love to trade stories in the new year.
